Stone Wei-style Buddha Head

A fine carved grey stone Buddha head from China’s Northern Wei or Qi era. The features are full, the expression serene, eyes elongated, nose pointed and mouth smiling. The hair is done in a series of swirls, rising sharply to the pointed crown of head. This head from a full sculpture depicts the historic Buddha Sakyamuni in his role of spiritual teacher. Formerly in a European collection. The surface in its natural condition.
From the Northern Wei or Qi era, China, circa 6th century.
