Nommo plank-like Hermaphrodite Figure
This powerful, unusually large and enigmatic sculpture depicts a hermaphrodite figure – bearded and with distended breasts – both arms raised high in the manner of a Nommo. The expression is intense, the mouth open, nose elongated and a top-knot on the head. Done in a plank-like lozenge-form, two separated 4-columns of scarification marks are positioned below the breasts. The surface is dry, cracked in parts, with rich build-ups of layered patina from repeated applications and offerings.
Height: 43 inches (109.2 cm.)

Many features of this sculpture are reminiscent of a related board-like figure – also with arms raised – in a private European collection, exhibited at the Rietberg Museum, Zurich. Another related sculpture, also dried-out, was formerly in the Rene Rasmussen collection, Paris, France.
