Rampant Stone Lion with Animal
An unusual Indian pink sandstone carving of a rampant lion, his mouth open and with his front paws resting on an animal. The subject may depict rulership, suggested by the royal animal (the lion) subduing an animal. The surface of the stone is worn, from prolonged exposure to the elements.
From the Kushan era, Mathura region, Central India, circa 3rd century AD.
Height: 18 inches (45.7 cm.).
