White Sumatra Goddess Durga
An exquisite light beige to white Indonesian stone carving of the Hindu goddess Durga in the form of Maheshasuramardini (“slayer of the buffalo demon”. She stands on the back of the buffalo Mehesha, holding him by the tail with her lower left hand and the hair of his demonic humanoid form with her lower right hand. Her hair is piled high and is decorated with jewelry, she is beautiful yet with a powerful expression, six-armed, holding a spear, a fly whisk and other weapons. She wears a sari blouse, a sarong wrapped around her hips and various items of jewelry including an ornate necklace, ear-rings, arm and wrist bangles and a decorated belt. Lovely overall surface color and patina.
